No one likes to move into a house they’re not done building. My parents did that recently. They were building the home of their dreams. But deadlines, which never seem to get met when it comes to, well… anything, were unattainable. And so, in their fifties, with three grown children, my parents moved into a house only partly built. Now I like to imagine that they slept in sleeping bags on the concrete floor, a candle in between them, pine framing encaging them. But the house was, in fact, fairly livable.
Imagine me, however, in a tiny sleeping bag, huddled in the center of the house of my dreams. It’s painted, the framing is done, some of the dry-wall is up. But there are still piles of bricks and buckets of paint and uncoiled wiring all about me.
This blog has been an incredibly formative journey for me. Wait. No. I’ve been on an incredibly formative journey. And now I’m passing into another phase of my life. For me, that meant making some changes. Gutting the place. Tearing down old walls, putting up new ones. Laying new carpeting… new mid-century oak plank flooring, etc.
So please bear with me because I’m not quite finished. There’s going to be wonky thumbnails, uncategorized blog posts, and weird-shaped photos for a while. But though there are still a few nails to pound and a few walls to paint– I think you can get a pretty good idea of what she’s supposed to look like.
Thank you all for being a part of this last 8 months with me. It sounds melodramatic when I say it that way, but having people to share in the things I’ve done and seen has been incredibly fulfilling. To be honest, this last 8 months wouldn’t have been nearly as enjoyable were it not for this blog, and for that I thank you all.
But I’m not going away. (Really, if you want me to, just stop coming to this site… unsubscribe from this RSS feed. I won’t be offended).
The essence of this blog will stay the same: to share a bit of the things I find beautiful/moving/fun. To share a glimpse of my daily adventures. But the look, and some of the direction I’m taking will be transformed (which, I assume, will be relatively apparent). The layout is designed to read more like a magazine. Things are (hopefully) a little more organized and simplified. I’m hoping this will push me to be more selective with the images I share and the words I use– to daily be posting quality images and stories.
I will have some new fun things coming in the future, but in the mean time, I couldn’t wait to have a house-warming party, regardless of the exposed piping and unpainted drywall.
So my I propose a toast: to new beginnings.
Every day I wake up and am so glad for new beginnings.
(Smash the champagne bottle over the front step of the house…)
